Greening Le Moyne!
Michael Sgro, Assistant Director for Marketing & Family Programs at Le Moyne College

At Le Moyne College, we understand the importance of eco-awareness and are continually looking for ways to up the environmental consciousness in our office. With “going green” on the mind of many, we realize that taking steps to reduce our carbon footprint not only saves the environment, but also helps us build even greater relationships with our alumni.

Many of our green initiatives have been focused on gathering new e-mail addresses for our alumni and parent communities. From a business standpoint, gathering these working e-mails saves us thousands of dollars a year on print and mailing charges.

From a GREEN community standpoint, the less paper we use — the more of Earth’s resources we save and the less of an eco footprint we make. This message has resonated within our community and to date we have gathered more than 2,000 new e-mails from alumni, parents, and friends.

Several green campaigns have been started and maintained at Le Moyne, including:

You Never Call or Write (Part 2) On the 1st anniversary of our online community, we’re continuing our “You never call or write” campaign with “you still never call…you still never write…” to encourage alumni and friends to go online for all of their communication needs.

The TREE campaign
As a challenge to our alumni, we’re planting a tree on campus for each class year that reaches 65 percent online registration. This is our second anniversary of the online community effort, which has had a huge impact on our registrations.

With the emphasis on online communication, we are now only mailing invitations and correspondence to alumni and parents who we do not have an e-mail for in our system. Doing so has saved our office thousands of dollars and saved the environment countless natural resources.

All in all, we have gotten a tremendous response in our efforts to GO GREEN at Le Moyne. We’re seeing involvement from all generations, even our older alumni. Not only are we building better affinity with alumni and friends, but registrations are up, costs are down, and we’re saving the earth one e-mail at a time!

  Bates College

Last summer, Bates received a 99--the highest possible score--from the Princeton Review and ecoAmerica green rating system, a score shared only with 10 other colleges and universities from across the country.  Bates has been working for over a decade to contribute to and further explore the ways in which it can become more conscious of its carbon footprint and effect on the local ecosystem.  Read more.
